1. The Origin: The Birth of Prince Siddhartha
Over 2,600 years ago, Queen Maya gave birth to Prince Siddhartha under an Ashoka tree in Lumbini Garden. Upon his birth, the Prince took seven steps and declared: "Above and below heaven, I alone am the World-Honored One." This signified his perfection of practice over countless eons and his impending Buddhahood. Two streams of celestial water cascaded from the heavens to bathe him, a divine event that inspired the annual tradition of the "Buddha Bathing Ceremony."
2. The True Meaning of Bathing the Buddha: Purifying the Mind and Body
Bathing the Buddha is not merely the physical washing of a statue. It symbolizes a meditative practice to purify our body, speech, and mind. As we pour the water, we focus our intention on cleansing inner afflictions and restoring our original purity.
While bathing the Buddha, we can silently recite:
"I now bathe all Tathagatas, Whose assembly of merit is adorned with pure wisdom. May sentient beings of the five turbidities leave defilement behind, And together realize the pure Dharma-body of the Buddha."
