Birthday of Medicine Buddha

Medicine Buddha, the Lord of the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli, is revered as the "Great King of Physicians." His birthday falls on the 30th (or 29th) day of the 9th lunar month.

He made Twelve Great Vows to relieve suffering, heal disease, and provide for the needs of all beings.​ With infinite compassion, he heals physical and mental suffering. He grants longevity and cures the "ailment of birth and death," guiding beings toward liberation from Samsara.

On this sacred day, practitioners perform the Medicine Buddha Repentance Ritual, offering prayers, lighting lamps, and releasing captive animals to invoke blessings and well-being.

His name, "Lapis Lazuli Light," reflects his body's purity—as transparent and radiant as lapis lazuli, illuminating the entire universe with divine light.
